Orthognathic Surgery

Corrective jaw, or orthognathic surgery is performed by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal and dental problems, including the misalignment of jaws and teeth, which, in turn can improve chewing, speaking and breathing. Orthodontic surgery may dramatically improve appearance as well as correcting functional problems.

Moving the jaws also moves the teeth, so braces are always performed in conjunction with jaw correction. The braces are usually in place for at least a year prior to the surgery. After surgery, Dr. Statler will refine your new bite, ensuring your teeth are in their optimal position after surgery.

If you are interested in learning more about jaw surgery, please visit the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons’ website. It has very accurate and clear information on the specifics of jaw surgery.
